On Thursday, November 21, the middle school orchestra traveled to Miami Beach to attend an educational concert. The New World Symphony performed with the purpose of introducing school-age students to a full orchestra. This year, our students got to hear from a student soloist and winner of the Sphinx Competition and a few living composers who spoke about creativity. The New World Symphony, established and directed by the conductor of the San Francisco Symphony, Michael Tilson Thomas, helps train post-graduate musicians. This year, our Lower and Middle Schools will be doing a production of Mary Poppins Jr., and our High School is gearing up for The Sound of Music! Students who are in the third-eighth grade have the opportunity next week to audition for all the roles in Mary Poppins Jr., and also for the five younger von Trapp children in The Sound of Music. Under the direction of Mr. David Schwartz, the WA Orchestra brought the cheer of the gospel through music to the seniors at Active Senior Center on Wednesday. Students performed selections of popular music, spirituals, and Christmas music. In addition, the group sang some carols together. This special gathering took place because of an encounter at this year's Beach Day. Over 50 cars arrived for the Classic Car Show on Saturday, November 16. The overwhelming response raised over $3,000 for the WA Band to travel to Cuba this spring. Mr. Jeff Carroll, WA Band Director and the event organizer, was pleased with the results. “A very special thank you goes to everyone who entered a car in our car show this year. The International Thespian Society (ITS) had its third annual induction ceremony on Thursday, October 17. ITS President, Kylie Mathis, handed certificates, membership cards, and ITS pins to nine new members of Troupe 8570. This honor society recognizes, encourages, and rewards students for work in all aspects of theatre. In addition, ITS students are honored at a national level and can compete in local, state, and national competitions.
