Arts

On Monday, May 18, the Fine Arts Department recognized the talents and accomplishments of our students. Each department produced outstanding work this year. These acknowledgments are an encore for some and a debut for others: Band These students would never “blow their own horn,” so we will do it for them! Congratulations to jazz band seniors, Anna Sansbury and Josh Lencse, for their successful performances at Sacred Music Florida. Anna received a Superior rating in the Solo Contest and first place in the senior division. Josh also received a Superior rating in the Solo Contest and second place in the senior division....

We congratulate sixth-grade student, Camilla Zayas-Cruz, and eighth-grade student, Bryan Wells, for their acceptance into the Florida Youth Orchestra (FYO). With over 400 members, FYO is an audition-based youth orchestra with five orchestras of differing levels. Both students will play in the Symphony Orchestra, the second-highest level. Auditions take place each spring to give students the opportunity to advance to a higher level. Because of COVID-19, auditions could not be in person this year. Camilla, who is currently playing in the eighth grade WA orchestra, used Zoom for her audition. However, for Bryan, FYO invited him to the next level based...

Back in July, sophomore, Pauline Baxter, wrote a song at Camp Electric in Nashville, Tennessee with the help of two friends, Heath and Rachel. The three friends met in a songwriting class and finished it that same week. Heath is a band member of HNG 10, a Christian Electro-Pop Band based out of Northeast Florida. Heath originally started HNG 10 near the end of 2017 as a solo project. Under their label, Vision Group Records, HNG 10 and Pauline Baxter released "Love Me Back" last week. The drama class had a very special guest this week. Mrs. Rachel Cox invited Laura Leigh Turner, a Christian Broadway actress, to speak to her students and give her testimony. Laura Leigh Turner is a native of Little Rock, Arkansas and a graduate of Oklahoma City University. Currently, she lives in New York City, where she stars as Karen Smith in Mean Girls on Broadway. She has appeared in regional and school productions of Memphis, Hairspray, Sister Act, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Shrek the Musical. Laura Leigh was raised in the Christian faith and is passionate about her family and the arts. When...

While our high school choir cannot currently sing together in the same room, that detail has not stopped them from receiving a distinct honor. Our high school chorus received an invitation to sing at Carnegie Hall—not once, but twice, next school year! First, the choral director at Gordon College invited WA students to participate in a Christian school concert at Carnegie Hall. Then, our students were asked to perform with Eric Whitacre next year at this prestigious concert stage. Quarantine has not slowed our robust chorus program! We congratulate our students for this recognition as they look forward to these remarkable...
