It is with great excitement that the Lower School announces the addition of a math enrichment program for grades 3–5 titled “M3 Adventure.” This program utilizes the M3 Mentoring Mathematical Minds curriculum which is a National Association for Gifted Children's Curriculum Studies Award Winner. It was designed for gifted and high ability students and was developed at the University of Connecticut NEAG School of Education's Renzulli Center for Creativity. On Friday, January 22, 2021, we held our Scripps/Miami Herald 4th and 5th-grade Spelling Bee. The students were well-prepared and excited to show their spelling expertise. After 18 rounds and 167 words of intense competition, Klorey White won the spelling bee. Klorey will go on to represent Westminster Academy in the Miami Herald/Scripps National Spelling Bee for Broward County in March. Westminster Academy will be hosting two safe and socially distanced Open House informational events to share how a fusion of faith and intellect at WA creates a unique experience in each child’s life! We were disappointed that we could not hold our annual Pumpkin Patch this year, but God had another plan. The Lower School decided to bless elderly people residing in assisted living homes with “Encouragement Pumpkins.” The younger students decorated them, and older students added a Bible verse and a word of encouragement. These pumpkins have been placed in “quarantine,” and then student council officers will have the privilege of delivering them through a partnership with a local ministry, Heart2Heart Outreach. The Lower School Student Council is looking forward to serving the Lower School by organizing service projects and other fun activities for our lower school students. We will continue our efforts with Operation Christmas Child and raise funds for activities and those in need through candy cane and icy pop sales and valentine grams. We are excited to develop leadership skills through the Student Council and set a great example for our fellow lower school students.
