On Monday, May 18, the Fine Arts Department recognized the talents and accomplishments of our students. Each department produced outstanding work this year. These acknowledgments are an encore for some and a debut for others: Band These students would never “blow their own horn,” so we will do it for them! Congratulations to jazz band seniors, Anna Sansbury and Josh Lencse, for their successful performances at Sacred Music Florida. The drama class had a very special guest this week. Mrs. Rachel Cox invited Laura Leigh Turner, a Christian Broadway actress, to speak to her students and give her testimony. Laura Leigh Turner is a native of Little Rock, Arkansas and a graduate of Oklahoma City University. Currently, she lives in New York City, where she stars as Karen Smith in Mean Girls on Broadway. She has appeared in regional and school productions of Memphis, Hairspray, Sister Act, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Shrek the Musical. Westminster Academy proudly presents The Sound of Music, sponsored by Sage Dental and Dr. Steven Short Orthodontics. This play is one of the most nostalgic musicals, accredited to the memorable film version with Julie Andrews. While this musical is slightly different from the film most remember, the story is still the heartwarming, real-life story of the Von Trapp Family singers. The stage production follows Maria, a postulant at an Austrian abbey, who becomes the governess for the large Von Trapp family. In their inaugural year, our WA Junior Thespian stars are shining! This past weekend, five students from sixth and seventh grade traveled to Orlando for the Junior Thespian Conference and Competition. They qualified for this event by receiving “Excellent” ratings for their performances at the local District competition in December. This invaluable experience allowed students to attend workshops taught by Broadway actors and dancers. On Saturday, up against hundreds of middle school students from around the state, the students competed in their events. Westminster Academy's Thespian Society, Troupe 8570, completed their first One Acts Competition with District 7 Thespians. This competition is very competitive, and the students' performance received the loudest applause of the day! This new cast of students performed Good Good Trouble on Bad Bad Island and received a trophy for Excellent Overall. In addition, sophomore Mikey White received the trophy for Best Supporting Actor for all two days of the One Acts Competition while junior Hunter Kriezinger received a plaque, chosen Best Actor in Troupe 8570.
