Last week Westminster Academy Latin students attended the 73rd Florida Junior Classical League State Latin Forum held April 7–9, at the Wyndham Orlando Resort and Convention Center. Our students competed with over 900 students representing 38 schools throughout Florida. This semester our high students have multiple opportunities to hear from a variety of professionals in the classroom setting. This week our 6th through 8th-grade students competed in our annual spelling bee. Seventh-grade student, Olivia Faber, won the bee and will represent Westminster Academy at the Miami Herald/Scripps National Spelling Bee for Broward County next year. Nicholas Sirois (also in 7th grade) was the runner-up, followed by 8th-grade student Daniel Pucé. Last month, we held our 4th and 5th-grade spelling bee. The students were well-prepared and excited to show their spelling expertise. After 13 rounds and 147 words of intense competition, Siri Deenah won the spelling bee. The fourth and fifth-grade classes have been working hard on this year’s Science Fair projects. Each student did individual experiments as they displayed their knowledge of the Scientific Method. The fourth-grade winning projects were selected with the help of the National Honor Society. The fifth-grade students presented their projects before two judges on Monday, April 26. The judges were very impressed by all of the hard work, scientific thought, and creative display boards, making their job of deciding the top three very difficult.
