Even though we could not gather in person, a signing ceremony took place Wednesday, April 15, for Stephan Swenson. A virtual crowd assembled online to watch Stephan sign his National Letter of Intent to play basketball for Stetson University. Joining us from Brussels, Belgium, Stephan spent the last two seasons at WA. He helped guide the Lions to a 4A state title in 2019 and a district championship in 2020. What a year WA Alumnus, Paul Atkinson ’17, has had as a Yale Bulldog! His contributions to their basketball team have been significant. First, in late February, Paul reached 1,000 career points. He became the 30th player in Yale’s school history to score 1,000. This season, Paul averaged 17.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. A few short weeks later, the Junior Forward was named Ivy League Co-Player of the Year and became a unanimous All-Ivy League First Team selection. We congratulate our Men’s and Ladies’ Varsity Basketball teams on their hard work this season! They both contributed two more district championships for WA Athletics. Ladies’ Varsity Basketball The Ladies’ Varsity Basketball team had a very successful 2019-20 season. Filled with a lot of competitive games this season, they also had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., to participate in the She Got Game National Tournament. Once again, WA has enjoyed a “Winter Wonderland” this February. Thanks to our student-athletes, our school celebrated district championship wins for each of our varsity winter sports for the second year in a row. Our soccer teams were the first to win titles. Ladies’ Soccer prevailed against the South Florida Heat with a 2-1 win at the District Finals. Then, Men’s Soccer mimicked the same success. They also left District Champions with a 2-1 win over Highlands Christian. Next, our basketball teams joined the winning streak.
