waboysciver_2Last year, the men’ cross country team took the state title for the sixth time in WA history—the first since 1988. With six of the seven returning this year, the Lions looks to make another mark in state history.

Virtually the entire team has recorded more summer miles than any year previous displaying team unity, deep friendships, commitment to group goals, and a willingness to sacrifice for achievement.

Ken Key—Florida Dairy Farmers 2016 Boys’ Class 1A Coach-of-the-Year

March 20, 2017 Posted in: Athletics Tags:

Coach Ken Key has been selected as the Florida Dairy Farmers 2016 Boys’ Class 1A Coach-of-the-Year

Florida’s dairy farmers are proud sponsors of a unique high school sports awards program in the country, exemplifying their commitment to youth. Since 1992, the program has honored more than 5,000 of the top student-athletes and coaches across the state and now recognizes all 30 FHSAA sanctioned and recognized sports. With past winners, Tim Tebow, Alex Rodriguez, Amare Stoudamire and more, the list of winners reads like a “who’s who” of our state’s athletes.

The program also emphasizes to young people the importance of keeping dairy a primary part of their diet. At on-campus awards ceremonies, producers lead assemblies in a “milk toast,” putting a face on the dairy industry for future generations.

We a proud to mention our very own Coach Ken Key won Coach-of-the-Year this year, for the part he played in our Varsity Men’s Cross Country team winning the 2016 1A state championship, after a three-step nomination and voting process. Before the conclusion of a sport’s competitive season, the Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA) solicits each of its 24 district chairmen for nominations of top athletes and coaches in each classification. The district chairmen solicit the other coaches in their district for these nominations during the coaches’ meetings that are held before the beginning of district championship play.

Congratulations Coach Key!

Varsity Cross Country States Recap—Men’s Team Are State Champs!

November 8, 2016 Posted in: Athletics Tags: ,

Head Coach Ken Key uses the word “hungry” as the characteristic that enabled the Varsity Men’s Cross Country team to do what they did all season, particularly at the state meet that took place on Saturday, November 5, at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida.

Since the beginning, the Men’s Cross Country team had their eyes set on a state championship, and they accomplished their goal. They finished first in the state as a team in Class 1A, while lone senior Patrick Sastre led the way all season and ended up finishing 9th in the state.

Since the summer began, both the men’s and ladies’ team dedicated their early mornings, late evenings, and Saturdays to train and prepare for this season. The hard work continued through the fall up until the State meet.

It was a well-deserved accomplishment from a close and dedicated group. The team looks forward to the future of the program as they continue to grow and hope to make another run next year at States.
