19 Mar Hands-On Learning in Fourth and Sixth Grade
Learning came to life in meaningful ways for Westminster Academy students through engaging, hands-on experiences in both fourth and sixth grade. These experiences reflect Westminster Academy’s commitment to cultivating curiosity, creativity, and real-world learning at every grade level.
Fourth-grade students showcased their creativity and problem-solving skills during the Invention Convention, presenting original ideas developed over several months. From identifying real-world problems to designing innovative solutions, students confidently shared their prototypes and research, demonstrating critical thinking, perseverance, and strong communication skills.
Sixth-grade students stepped into history during their annual Barter Day, a favorite hands-on learning experience. After studying ancient civilizations and early economic systems, students created goods or services and traded with classmates, simulating life along the Silk Road.
Through this interactive activity, students gained a deeper understanding of how economies functioned before standardized currency and explored the foundations of the American free enterprise system. Barter Day reinforces key social studies concepts while allowing students to experience firsthand the principles of trade, supply and demand, and mutual benefit in a fun and memorable way.
