A Word From Dr. Satterly—December 20, 2023

Dear WA Community,

This time of year, I can almost hear Charlie Brown sing, “Christmas Time Is Here.” Admittedly, that tune is not the most sacred—for a robust exploration of more traditional Christmas hymns, please refer to the Coral Ridge Advent Devotional. Perhaps the music running through my mind is more the result of the Christmas music playing in the office. Regardless of whether it is the music, decorations, or attire—all suggest the coming of this special season and, with it, many Christmas traditions.

One of our family traditions is the reading of John 1 on Christmas morning. I know many other families that spend time reading and reflecting on the account in Luke 2. Perhaps a less traditional Christmas passage to consider is Galatians 4:4–7, as it captures the purpose and meaning of the coming of the Christ. It begins, “But in the fullness of time….” I love this phrase because it reminds me that God is in control. He determines. He is the author of the Gospel narrative. Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of the season, which Luke’s narrative captures well with “but there was no room in the inn,”—it is helpful to be reminded of the big picture. Christmas is a cosmic invasion. It is Emmanuel—God with us!

Another part of the season that impacts our school is the end of the first semester and the Christmas break. Soon the academic year will be at the halfway point, and with that, our attention begins to shift toward thinking about next year. Last week you received information about re-enrollment. Based on our turnout for a recent open house and traffic in the admissions office, I don’t want you to overlook the preferred enrollment window open for our current families. Enrollment for next school year will be available beginning on Thursday, January 4, 2024. Last year we had a 93% retention rate and significant interest from new families, so please watch for an email from Austin Elmer in our Admissions Office with specific instructions.

Recently I was with some alumni who shared stories about their WA experience. I couldn’t help but wonder at how God has used our school to advance His Kingdom. Since 1971, God has raised up a school grounded on Jesus and committed to raising up Christian leaders. In some ways, Westminster Academy’s story could begin with “in the fullness of time…” and be summed up with “to God be the glory, great things He has done.”

A very Merry Christmas to all!
