At Westminster Academy, we care deeply for the educational, spiritual, and physical well-being of each student. Our school clinic is staffed by a registered nurse who is there for each student, from PK2 to twelfth grade. Our partnership with families is vital in every aspect, especially in student health. Please review the following illness guidelines regarding sending your child to school. If you have questions, please call the school nurse at 954.815.8762.
Cold Symptoms, Sore Throat, Cough
Your child may go to school when he or she has ALL the following:
-
- has only mild cold symptoms or no cold symptoms
- has a normal temperature (under 100 degrees) for 24 hours or more without fever-reducing medication.
- has enough energy to do schoolwork
- can keep from spreading germs by washing their hands, throwing away used tissues, and covering their cough
- has been taking antibiotics for MORE than 24 hours (or is not taking any antibiotics)
Your child may NOT go to school when he or she:
-
- has a fever (temperature over 100 degrees) or needs fever-reducing medicine.
- has been taking antibiotics for less than 24 hours.
- has a persistent cough and an uncontrolled, copiously running nose
Vomiting/Diarrhea*
Children must stay home for at least 24 hours after vomiting or having diarrhea (three or more loose stools in a day). They must be able to eat and drink before coming back to school.
Fever*
Your child must have a normal temperature (under 100 degrees) for 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine (such as Tylenol, Advil, Motrin, etc.) before returning to school.
Headache
A child should stay home if their headache is bad enough that they can not do schoolwork or if they have other symptoms, such as a fever.
Earache/Toothache
A child does not have to miss school because of an earache or a toothache if they are getting medical care, have no other symptoms such as fever, and feel well enough to do schoolwork.
Red Eyes
Keep your child home if the white part of the eye is red and there is yellow or green crusty or gooey stuff in the eye. If your child has pink eye (conjunctivitis), they must stay home until they have been using antibiotic eye drops for at least 24 hours.
Rash
Keep your child home if they have a new rash that covers a large part of their body, or if the rash is oozing or contagious.
*If your child is sent home from school for these symptoms, he or she may not return to school the next day.
Thanks for helping to keep our children healthy!
