17 Sep Spotlight: Fine Arts Director Mr. Matt Calderin
Westminster Academy is blessed to have Mr. Matt Calderin leading our Fine Arts program. A Hollywood, Florida native, Mr. Calderin began playing drums at age five and was already performing professionally by thirteen. At sixteen, he was recognized in DownBeat Magazine as a Gold and All-Star award winner before earning a full scholarship to the University of Miami School of Music.
His career has taken him worldwide, where he has performed with renowned artists including The Beach Boys, Herbie Hancock, Paquito D’Rivera, Wycliffe Gordon, Nestor Torres, and even William Shatner. He has also collaborated on recording projects with producers and artists such as Tom Dowd, Scott Storch, Gladys Knight, Pedro Capó, and Ha*Ash. Endorsed by Sabian Cymbals and Vic Firth Drumsticks as a top educator, Mr. Calderin is not only an accomplished performer but also a gifted teacher and mentor.
In addition to his leadership at WA, Mr. Calderin will be featured in the Matt Calderin Big Band: Jazz Around the World this Friday, September 19, at 7:30 p.m. at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church. The concert will showcase jazz across cultures through swing standards, Latin grooves, and reimagined classics.
We are grateful for Mr. Calderin’s achievements and for the way he inspires our students to pursue excellence in the arts, using their God-given gifts for His glory.
