Title: Director of Campus Operations, Security and Safety

Position Status or Schedule: Full-Time Staff

Reports to: Chief Operating Officer

Position Summary: The Director of Campus Operations, Security and Safety will maintain a safe and secure environment for students, employees, visitors, and the community by developing, establishing, and enforcing safety and security policies, access control procedures, accident prevention efforts, fire, safety, emergency management, and asset protection programs. As part of Campus Operations, the position will also manage student transportation, including a fleet of 4 buses supplemented by a third-party provider.

This position works extensively with the security team, COO, school administrators, and the school community on all areas of school safety. Work also involves implementing training programs pertaining to matters of safety and security for school employees.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establishes and oversees a comprehensive school security and safety program, policies, and procedures by studying organization operations and schedules; establishing internal controls; conducting inspections as appropriate; reporting potential hazards to appropriate departments; creating and updating policies and Standard Operating Procedures to include safety and security manuals.
  • Schedules and supervises off-duty law enforcement officers, WA security officers, and contract security officers. Establish the workstations and patrol areas and a schedule of where they should be at each time during the school day. Outlines specific responsibilities based on the workstation assigned and monitors throughout the day to ensure officers are in compliance with location assignments and responsibilities.
  • Oversees traffic control on campus, including vehicle and pedestrian traffic during morning and afternoon car lines, all on-campus events, and traffic light and crosswalk operations.
  • Manage the process of vetting and admitting vendors and guests to campus and oversee the monitoring of all non-school personnel.
  • Patrol all areas of the school during the day, meeting and greeting students in a positive way. Provide high visibility and presence on campus.
  • Respond during non-school hours if a problem occurs on campus (alarms, severe weather, etc.)
  • Attend special events as required, which may include evening and/or weekend work.
  • Coordinates school safety compliance with federal, state, and local regulations by studying existing and new requirements and overseeing and enforcing school-wide adherence to requirements.
  • Conducts and coordinates safety, security, and emergency preparedness training by developing, scheduling, and/or facilitating training for staff and students relating to school safety, security, and emergency preparedness.
  • Secures facilities, equipment, students, and personnel by working in conjunction with the appropriate departments in recommending safety and security equipment purchases and upgrades; maintains records of fire and other emergency drills and conducts drills when appropriate.
  • Serves as a liaison with local law enforcement agencies. Working directly with local law enforcement agencies during critical incident situations and follow-up.
  • Works with appropriate departments to meet operational security needs within budget; works with Business Office and Facilities departments for capital improvements as needed; schedules expenditures.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of security plans for special events.
  • Communicates with other schools on matters related to school safety.
  • The Security Director participates in annual training to stay current on laws, policies, and procedures regarding school safety.
  • Conduct annual safety audits of campus.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Experience in law enforcement, emergency management, military, or as a school resource officer is preferred
  • Strong managerial skills. Able to command the respect of a security team and be effective in getting them to understand their responsibilities and the need for constant vigilance
  • Strong organizational skills. Specifically in the area of process improvement. A key component of the job is establishing processes and then ensuring those required to execute them are well-trained and held accountable.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills; ability to effectively interact with staff, students, parents, guests, and employees in managing change and/or challenging situations.
  • Self-motivated, independent, and tendency to take the initiative. 

Physical Demands:

The ideal candidate can:

  • Occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Work in standard office conditions and climate.
  • Work in varied extreme outside weather conditions 
  • Sit and stand for extended periods of time; bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
