Dear WA Community,
More than a year ago, as one group met to deal with the challenges of COVID, another part of our team gathered to begin dreaming about our 50th Anniversary Celebration. Both groups understood the significance of Christian education in this cultural moment. That first group of educators resolved to find a way to open our campus because education is fundamentally a relational exchange that is best conducted face to face. The second team sought to create a celebration that quickly became thought of as the “best family reunion ever.”
Mission accomplished!
As much as we appreciate the successful navigation through these trying times, the 50th Anniversary Celebration was one for the ages. From the former board chair dinner, which opened the formal events, to the Alumni Brunch on Sunday, the activities were worthy of our rich legacy. We took a walk down memory lane and took a peek at our future. We welcomed considerable crowds to each event as alumni and friends of WA returned home. The sounds of fellowship were such a blessing, but I think the best part was 50 Stories of 50 Years—a collection of devotions from across our community. To God be the Glory, Great things He has done!
In case you missed it, here is a brief recap.
For most, the weekend kicked off at Friday night’s homecoming game. However, for a small group of former Westminster Academy School Board Chairs, it began with an appreciation dinner that Thursday evening. We are grateful for those who have served the school throughout its 50-year history and are excited about the future.
Before the game, alumni gathered for the annual homecoming tailgate and the Athletic Hall of Honor Inductions. Families, students, faculty, and staff joined the pre-game food and festivities—much like other homecomings. However, when the last note of our national anthem ended, it quickly became clear this was no ordinary homecoming as fireworks filled the sky. Each time the Lions scored, there were also fireworks, which was often given the game’s 42 to 0 final score.
Saturday evening, over 550 guests attended the Golden Gala at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort and Spa, where we celebrated the past and caught a glimpse of the future.
The following morning was WA Sunday at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, which included several talented WA students, staff, and alumni. After the worship service, alumni gathered in the James F. Lyndsay Gymnasium for a Farewell Brunch.
Just as quickly as we swept up after the fireworks and with the echoes of the Golden Gala still in our ears, it is now time for the next event. Each year, as an important part of our revenue, we conduct an annual fund campaign. This year, that campaign is built around the 50th day of school. For the second year in a row, our faculty and staff are “all in” with 100% participation in our annual fund.
