Celebrating The Life Of Dr. Sam Freas

Celebrating The Life Of Dr. Sam Freas

We join Coach Sam Freas, Director of WA Aquatics, and his family in grieving the loss of his father, Dr. Sam Freas.

Dr. Freas was a legendary swim coach who left a distinct mark on swimming programs wherever he went. He served as head coach at Arkansas, Hawaii, and Louisiana State, SUNY-Potsdam and Allegheny College. He was currently serving as head swim coach of Oklahoma Baptist University. Dr. Freas authored many books about coaching sprinting as well as several other academic works. Over his career, he was named Southwest Conference Coach of the Year four times, Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year three times, and Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year twice. He sent a total of 19 swimmers to the Olympics and coached the South African team at the Olympic Games.

Locally, Dr. Freas served as the President and CEO of the International Swimming Hall of Fame from 1989–2004. All four of his children attended Westminster Academy, and three of his 11 grandchildren are current students. He leaves behind his wife of 43 years, Rosemary.

Loved-ones will gather twice to celebrate this man of great faith with a larger-than-life personality. First is a service tomorrow in Oklahoma. Then, we will honor him next Saturday, April 13, at 5:30 p.m. at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church. Please keep the Freas family in your prayers.
