A Word From Mr. Critch—April 28, 2016

IMG_5472Yesterday the WA Upper School celebrated God’s blessings in the lives of our students. The middle and high school students joined together for the Fine Arts/Academic Champions Assembly. Each of the Fine Arts groups presented the events and accomplishments of the involved students.  Some of the highlights include: Broadcasting presented A Year In Review and the first annual Wabbies Awards, for Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Video, voted on by the student body. The Juried Art Show was presented via video announcing the ribbon winners, including Best In Show. Robotics showed their year’s highlights via video, including STEM Day in Tallahassee, where they were successfully able to lobby the Florida legislature to contribute $200,000 to support robotics teams throughout the State of Florida.  Mrs. Gianino introduced the students involved in the Harvard Model Congress and presented a synopsis of how this event takes place. The Yearbook was presented to the students by Mrs. Perry and the staff on video showing how the book is constructed and several of the yearbook staff were interviewed. The Upper School Guidance staff presented the Furman Scholarship Awards to the 11th-grade students who were nominated by WA and selected by Furman University.

The program culminated in the announcement of the Class of 2016 Top 10 (in alphabetical order):

  • Kitt Curtis
  • Kathryn Ferraguti
  • Hannah Harms
  • Delany Klassen
  • Becky Kurth
  • Churchill Perry
  • Elizabeth Pierson
  • Gabriella Shyne
  • Ray Tong
  • Mark Yoder

Please join us in congratulating and celebrating with all of our Upper School students as we praise and thank God for His abundant outpouring of grace and blessings on our students and our families. Please pray that God will continue to show His presence throughout the WA community.

Soli Deo Gloria,
Mike Critch

September 18, 2014 Posted in: School News Tags: , ,

2013-2014 YB StaffCongratulations to the 2014 Optime staff for receiving a Gold Medal Award from Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) and a First Place from National Scholastic Press Association NSPA.

“I have read many private K-12 schools’ books, and very few of them give as much balance to the upper and lower schools as you have managed to do here. In all, this is a great book. I am impressed that such a small staff managed to produce such a high-quality book,” one of CSPA’s judge’s commented.

The 2013-2014 editors were, Ashton Anderson, Emily Bishop and Laura Peed. Well done to the entire yearbook staff, which spans middle and high school.

“I am so proud of you. It was a privilege to work with you and have you as friends. Remember, without Him, our STRIV(E)ing would be losing! I love you,” said Ms. Carol Neal, yearbook mentor and teacher at WA for 43 years, until her recent retirement at the end of the last school year.

Well done Yearbook Lions, we are extremely proud of you for your hard work and dedication. Thank you, Carol for all the years you have faithfully served the Lord through your ministry at WA.

Yearbook Editorial Staff Visit National Scholastic Press Association Convention In Boston

November 22, 2013 Posted in: School News Tags: , , ,

Yearbook Editorial staffAttending the National Scholastic Press Association convention in Boston refreshed and refueled the editorial staff of the yearbook. Ashton Anderson, Emily Bishop, Laura Peed, Veronica Fulton, Alex Pagliaro, Emily Stevenson, Mrs. Brooke Perry and Miss Carol Neal attended workshops, spent time with other yearbook staffs and met with consultants to discuss this year’s book. “It was exciting to learn from the pros,” Laura Peed said. “We got good feedback on our book, and we were challenged to incorporate new ideas.”

Connecting with former students was a highlight of the trip. Emily Bishop spent the afternoon with Alex Hall at Gordon, the girls visited with Alex Danielsen who attends MIT and Miss Neal caught up with Linda Allen Mosquera, ’78 Optime editor. Between visits and workshops the group also managed a trip to Quincy Market and a tour of Harvard.

The whole group brought back valuable knowledge to share with the entire staff, such as how to write effective copy, how to be great editors and leaders, and crucial improvements to make the book the absolute best.
