Busy Summer for WA Aquatics

June 2, 2016 Posted in: Athletics Tags: ,

This is a special summer for many of our WA aquatic athletes. Three of our athletes will soon be attempting to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Rising Junior Jessica Nava will swim the 100 Butterfly at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, on June 26. Fellow rising Junior Johanna Holloway will be competing at the U.S. Diving Olympic Trials in the 10m Synchronized Diving event on June 18 in Indianapolis, Indiana. WA alumnus and current WA club swimmer, AJ Barbar, who is a dual citizen of the U.S. and Lebanon will attempt to qualify for the Lebanese team at an international meet in the Bahamas on June 23. A big congratulations to all three of these athletes and may God bless you at these upcoming meets!

Many of our Lion water polo players also have an exciting summer planned. Adam Warters, Naomi Sanders, Tori Maxson, Joseph Maxson, and David Maxson will all be competing at the Sunshine State Games from June 24-26. This will serve as a qualifying tournament for the Junior Olympic tournament in San Jose, California, where Joseph Maxson and Adam Warters’ teams will very likely qualify and Naomi Sanders and Tori Maxson’s teams have a strong chance as well. Rising Sophomore Adam Warters will also be training in Hungary with his club team in late June and Rising Senior Naomi Sanders will be attending the Harvard University Water Polo Camp. In addition, several of our younger players including Antonio Dominguez and Trent and Blake Shaw will be attending water polo camps throughout the summer.

March 24, 2016 Posted in: Athletics, School News Tags: ,

Senior Night SquareOn Thursday, March 17, Westminster Academy hosted two spring sport senior nights. On the tennis courts seniors Brendan Abernethy, Brandon Climenhage, Mackenzy Middlebrooks, and Ryan Markowski were all recognized as they took on the Posnack Rams. Each senior  handily defeated their opponents behind the nets. Climenhage defeated the number two player from Posnack with a sound victory over his opponent. Middlebrooks took care of her opponent in strong fashion while Markowski rallied to beat the Posnack three in an exciting match. Abernethy was a key contributor on his doubles team and soundly defeated Posnack’s best double.

Both Ladies’ and Men’s Water Polo teams capped off their last regular season games with memorable wins. The Lady Lions defeated Choate with an impressive 10-4 victory. The men’s team won handily against Hollywood Hills 13-3. Seniors Alexandra Garcia, Andrea Garcia, Victoria Maxson, Katie Nava, James Scasserra, Tyler Singh, and Daniel Wood were all recognized and hope to end their senior campaigns in strong fashion as they enter into the District tournament on April 5 at Fort Lauderdale High School.
