December 16, 2015 Posted in: Arts Tags: , , ,

IMG_7725On Tuesday, December 15, the middle school orchestra and choral students brought the Christmas season to life with their annual Christmas Concert. This year the concert was held in the morning as a special presentation for their classmates and our lower school students.

Parents enjoyed a brief continental breakfast before the concert and were treated to festive Christmas pieces from three orchestra groups and the entire middle school choir. The program was closed by two members of the middle school chapel worship team singing their arrangement of “O Come All Ye Faithful.”

From all of the middle school Fine Arts students to the entire WA community: Merry Christmas!

All County Orchestra

December 16, 2015 Posted in: Arts Tags: , ,

All County Orchestra auditions take place each year for students who excel on their instruments and who want a greater orchestral challenge. A director is brought in from one of the main metropolitan colleges or youth orchestras to conduct the orchestras.

Students from grades 7-12 compete with other students in the county for placement in either a middle school string ensemble, Silver, or a high school full orchestra, Gold. This year we have two in the Silver All County Orchestra, Hannah Billings and Heather Hench, and three in the Gold All County Orchestra, Hannah Harms, Olivia Gaus and Mahala Andre. They will perform in the Spring at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts.

All County Orchestra Concert

February 12, 2015 Posted in: Arts Tags: , ,

The All County Honors Orchestra concert event represents the brightest student musicians in the county. WA students performed in this concert on Tuesday, February 10, at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. The night consisted of performances given by an elementary ensemble (4th & 5th), a 6th & 7th grade ensemble (The Bronze Orchestra), a 7th & 8th grade ensemble (The Silver Orchestra), and a high school ensemble (The Gold Orchestra). While all of the ensembles are made up of players with talent and a love of music, the last two, Silver and Gold, are auditioned orchestras, so the top two are the cream of the crop. WA senior David Hong, was selected for the Gold Orchestra as well as winning the position of concertmaster for the event. He was the principal violinist. We had two other students involved, Angela Hench, Bronze Orchestra and Hannah Billings, Silver Orchestra.

David HongEach year, the top students of all the counties in the State of Florida audition for the All State orchestras that perform in Tampa in early January. Last November, David Hong learned that he had successfully auditioned for All State Symphonic Orchestra (11-12). He earned a spot in the 2nd violin section. Upon arrival in Tampa for the four day event, January 14-17, the string players go through another grueling audition process for seating. This year, David won the principal position for his section.

Well done David!
