High School Back-To-School BBQ

Screen Shot 2017-08-17 at 3.26.37 PMThis last Tuesday, students and faculty joyously kicked off this year with a deeply rooted tradition in the Back-To-School BBQ. The faculty and parents joined together to cook burgers, while soap suds stuck to soaked students sliding down the giant water slide. Students caught up with those they hadn’t seen since May, while others enjoyed casual, impromptu games of football, basketball, and soccer on the east campus Athletic Field, while even others splashed about in the O’Brien Family Swimming Complex Pool. It was “a fantastic way to connect with friends after the summer break,” seniors commented afterward.

Then, as tradition dictates, a superhero-T-shirt-clad Mrs. Gage started the shaving cream fight. Everyone got messy fighting the good fight. The cream was even still being cleaned off of the field the next day.

One senior aptly summed up both the shaving cream fight and the night: “it was fun, eventful, and wacky.”

8th Annual Fishing Tournament Recap

April 25, 2017 Posted in: Student Life Tags: , , , ,

On Friday, April 21, over 85 anglers set out bright and early with a goal of reeling in the biggest catch of the day. Top AnglerWA students and parents, along with fellow anglers, boarded 16 boats in addition to the Helen S. drift boat. Conditions were challenging, but that didn’t stop the fun and competition. As the day came to a close, all participants returned to shore to weigh in their catches at the home of Tom and Denise Ellis. They later returned to WA for the awards’ ceremony by the pool with dinner provided by Chick-fil-A Fort Lauderdale. Special thanks to our Title Sponsor, Journey Kids Dental, for bringing their team to serve dinner. Click here view pictures from the tournament.

Freshman, Mia Hibler, finished as “Top Overall Angler” with 26 pounds of Cobia and Dolphin. Mia is the first female in our tournament history to win this award! Westminster Academy father, Trey Miller, was awarded “Top Captain” with 40.7 pounds of fish caught on his boat. We would like to express our appreciation to Katy Singh and Denise Ellis for organizing the tournament. We are also grateful for our Title Sponsor, Journey Kids Dental, and additional sponsors AMH Family Homes, Atlantic Bait & Tackle, Benedetti Orthodontics, Bionic Bait, License to Chill/Rheem Pro Partner, and Salt H20.

We still have a few shirts available in adult medium and large and youth medium. They are long sleeve, Carolina blue dry fit shirts and may be purchased for $10 from Katy Singh in the Lower School office.

WA Students’ Environmental Work Selected By Jane Goodall As Project Of The Month

featured-702x336Congratulations to Christian, Derek, and Landon Petrisko on the selection of their “No Mangrove = No Man” project by Jane Goodall as her March Project of the Month. Christian, Derek, and Landon founded Wild Over Wildlife in 2009 as a voice for the voiceless animals of the world.

The mangrove project has many of the club members currently growing mangrove seedlings in their backyard, and hundreds of more seedlings are growing in the FIU shade house. Since the inception of this project in 2014, they have already transplanted thousands of seedlings in the South Florida area.

NHS Walks For Lauderdale Lakes Alzheimer’s Care Center

April 5, 2017 Posted in: Student Life Tags:

IMG_0502The National Honor Society has a special relationship with the Lauderdale Lakes Alzheimer’s Care Center. Throughout the year NHS visits the center with around 20 students to spend time with the seniors. NHS members, led by chairman Megan Kinsella, sing hymns and create crafts with the residents. The culmination of this relationship is the NHS sponsored Walk to raise money for the Center.

On Friday, March 24 the National Honor Society hosted a Walk to benefit the Lauderdale Lakes Alzheimer’s Care Center. This year NHS raised over $5,600! All member raised money. We had 99% participation in the event. Students wore their NHS shirts and after school made their way out to the West Campus to walk for support of the Center.

Chairman Kayla McCracken and others will be recognized at the Lauderdale Lakes City Commission meeting in April. Several directors from the center came out to participate as well. Congratulations students for raising such a generous amount for the Alzheimer’s Center.

A special thank you goes to Offerdahl’s for donating bagels for those who participated in the Walk.

image3Spring Zone Rally is a Zone-wide rally of all of the Key Club Divisions in Zone J, our zone. Over 400 South Florida Key Club students were in attendance from various schools. Our very own WA Key Club had 14 members in attendance: Dawn Erlich, Rachel Karsner, Christine Kamm, Ava Gaus, Jessica McKenzie, Hannah Brown, Caroline Elgut, Caroline Cespedes, Drew Franta, Savannah Rice, Keri-Anne Lue, Jada Fears, Emily Greven, and Sierra Sollars. Mrs. Shyne, our faculty advisor, was also in attendance. Our club received the Outstanding Key Club of the Year Award out of ten other schools from our division, 23B. This is a real honor considering that our club is less than four years old!  Some of the criteria were membership growth, attendance at events, the degree of activity within the community, Membership, and coordinating with Kiwanis. Congratulations to our officers and members!

Two of Westminster Academy’s student-led clubs, Students for Soldiers and the Key Club, held a collection drive during the month of September for our troops serving our country around the world. Over the Thanksgiving break, we received a thank you from an Army unit serving in the Middle East that received the more than 70 goodie bags from our upper school students and many letters from our preschool students. Thank you to all of those who helped make this a possibility. Please keep our service men and women in your prayers, especially during the Christmas Season.
