26 Jan Men’s Lions Soccer Are District Champions!
The varsity men’s soccer team played a difficult schedule this season facing teams such as American Heritage Plantation, Pine Crest, Miami Country Day, Saint Andrews School, etc. They lost some hard‐fought battles this season with their competitive schedule and ended up putting much focus on their psychological game through a soccer retreat in Melbourne last weekend before District play. This retreat helped the team refocus while reminding them of their purpose both on and off the field.
As a result, the Lions came out against the South Florida Heat in the District Semifinals on Monday and handily beat them 4–0, which was an improvement on their regular season victory of 3–0. Then in the District Finals, the Lions played long‐time district rival Sagemont who was a top seed in the district. Sagemont defeated the Lions 1–0 in the regular season.
This time, however, the Lions were playing for redemption, pride, and the home field advantage for Region play and they came out strong. The team out‐hustled Sagemont, with tremendous play from senior Reagan Zelnik who scored a header off a free kick from fellow senior Patrick Sastre which held up for the 1–0 victory and District Championship for the Lions. This was their third consecutive District Championship win. They will now take on the defending State Champions, Hillel Day School in the Regional Quarterfinals on Wednesday, February 1, at the west campus Athletic Complex at 7:00 p.m. Go Lions Soccer!
